The second day of this national meeting, which this year 2024 will take place in the islands of Gran Canaria and Tenerife, will be held on January 31st at the ITER facilities.

The Council of Tenerife is organizing, together with the Council of Gran Canaria, the Covenant of Mayors Office and the Canary Islands Federation of Municipalities, the National Meeting of the Covenant of Mayors 2024, which will take place on January 30 and 31 in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Tenerife, respectively, and will focus on climate change adaptation, citizen participation, tourism sustainability, energy poverty and energy communities.

The Instituto Tecnológico y de Energías Renovables (ITER) will host the second session of this meeting. The meeting will start on January 30 at the INFECAR facilities (Gran Canaria Fair) of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, and on January 31 at the ITER facilities of the Cabildo de Tenerife.

During the sessions in Gran Canaria, the new features of the Covenant of Mayors for the new year will be addressed and a tour of success stories and the problems arising from climate change mitigation and adaptation measures in different municipalities will be carried out.

The sessions in Tenerife will focus, among others, on climate change adaptation, energy poverty and citizen participation in local climate actions. Likewise, a topic as interesting for the Covenant community in the islands as tourism sustainability will be presented and discussed.

The event will be attended by the president of the Cabildo of Tenerife, Rosa Dávila Mamely, the president of the Canary Islands Federation of Municipalities, Mari Brito; the advisor to the Directorate General for Energy of the European Commission, Eero Ailio; and the Island Director of Natural Environment, Sustainability, Safety and Emergencies of the Cabildo of Tenerife, Pedro Millán del Rosario, as well as the mayors of the municipalities members of the pact.

In addition to hosting the session in Tenerife, ITER participates in the event in the framework of the GENERA project, co-funded by the LIFE program, in which it participates as a partner and whose objective is to assist municipalities for the implementation of energy transition agendas as set out in the European Clean Energy Initiative Agendas for European islands and the Covenant of Mayors. Elisa Peñalvo from the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV), coordinator of the project, will participate with the talk “LIFE-GENERA, Energy Transition in Municipalities” to share the tools available to assist municipalities to shift towards a more sustainable and low carbon economy. ITER will also make available to the attendees an information stand where information about the project, the objectives already achieved and the training courses that will soon be available.

The day in Tenerife will end with a guided visit to the ITER facilities where the attendees will be able to visit the D-Alix datacenter, the TEIDE-HPC supercomputer, the Bioclimatic Houses or the Laboratory of photovoltaic cells characterization, as well as to know the real time consumption visualization platform (NEXO).

The Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Sustainable Energy is a European Commission program considered to be the world’s largest urban climate and energy initiative, bringing together thousands of local and regional authorities with a voluntary commitment to implement the European Union’s climate and energy objectives in their territories.
