The first ENERCON wind turbine installed in Spain was installed at ITER.
The Wind Energy Department of ITER accompanied yesterday the company ENERCON, which commemorated in the Canary Islands the achievement of 1 GW of wind power installed in Spain, and in this act it was shown that the first wind turbine installed in Spain was its model E-32, which was installed in ITER, through the mediation of the founder of Enercon, Aloys Wobben, and his engineer Hans-Jochen Arndt. The installation of this wind turbine was one of the first bets of the manager and founder of ITER, Mr. Manuel Cendagorta-Galarza, to install renewable energies in Tenerife. Since then, ITER has installed 68.3 MW, 62 of them with wind turbines from this German company.
Between 1990 and 1993, the 2.83 MW Experimental Platform was installed and financed in collaboration with various organizations (ITER, Cabildo de Tenerife, Government of the Canary Islands, UNELCO and the European Union). The main objective of this platform was to study the performance of different types of wind turbines, in terms of power, manufacture, origin and technology, in order to establish guidelines on the suitability of the type of technology to be installed in the Canary Islands.
In 1996, the 4.8 MW wind farm was installed by the Economic Interest Association “EÓLICAS DE TENERIFE”, currently constituted in equal parts by ITER and ENEL Green Power. At the beginning it consisted of 16 MADE AE-30 wind turbines of 300 kW of nominal power each, which were replaced in 1999 by 8 MADE AE-46 wind turbines of 600 kW of nominal power each.
In 1998, with a project self-financed by ITER, a 5.5 MW wind farm was installed, consisting of 11 ENERCON E-40 wind turbines of 500 kW nominal power.
In 2018, the installation and commissioning of three new wind farms on the island of Tenerife was completed, the Areté and La Roca wind farms in the Industrial Park of Granadilla, of 18.4 MW and 16.7MW respectively; and the Wind Farm of the Environmental Complex of Arico, of 18.4 MW of power. ITER has been the promoter of these facilities at the time of their installation and at present.
The Areté Wind Farm consists of five ENERCON E-92 wind turbines with a rated power of 2,350 kW and two ENERCON E82 E4 wind turbines with a rated power of 3,020 kW, bringing the total power of the farm to 17,790 kW. The La Roca wind farm consists of three ENERCON E-92 wind turbines with a rated power of 2,350 kW and four ENERCON E82 E4 wind turbines with a rated power of 3,020 kW, giving a total power of 19,130 kW.
The wind farm of the Arico Environmental Complex consists of eight ENERCON wind turbines model E-92 with a rated power of 2,350 kW.
ITER is currently working on the repowering of its three oldest wind farms, replacing the existing wind turbines with ENERCON E-82 of 2.35 MW of individual power: in the experimental platform the 9 wind turbines will be replaced by 1 E-, the 8 wind turbines that make up the 4.8 MW wind farm will be replaced by 2 E-82, and the 11 turbines of the 5.5 MW wind farm will be replaced by two E-82.
