ITER researchers in supercomputing, artificial intelligence and energy transition to share their work in three open days

Coinciding with the Science and Innovation Weeks and the European Quality Week 2024, ITER organizes three open days to bring its scientific and technological work closer to society.

Once again, the Instituto Tecnológico y de Energías Renovables (ITER) aligns its scientific-technological dissemination activities with the programs organized by entities such as the Agencia Canaria de Investigación, Innovación y Sociedad de la Información del Gobierno de Canarias and the Oficina de Consumo del Cabildo Insular de Tenerife.

Within the framework of the Science and Innovation Weeks and the European Quality Week, the Institute of Technology and Renewable Energies (ITER), an entity of the Cabildo of Tenerife, will offer three open days to bring its scientific and technological work closer to society.

Outreach week at ITER: November 11 to 17.

During this week, ITER staff linked to the supercomputing department and to the GENERA and REGADIA projects will share their work with the audience:

  • Day on supercomputing (November 11th): Participants will be able to meet ITER’s supercomputing research team and take a guided visit to the data center where the TeideHPC and AnagaGPU supercomputers, key pieces in high performance projects and data analysis, are housed.
  • REGADIA Day – Using water wisely. Application of AI in agriculture (November 13) The objective of this project is to generate a tool that contributes to the optimization of water resources in the cultivation of banana and avocado through the use of enabling technologies such as IoT, Big Data, remote sensing and AI. During this day, there will be a practical demonstration of how new technologies are applied in agriculture in the Canary Islands. Participants will be able to see a demonstration of how the installed sensors work and how artificial intelligence (AI) is used to optimize water use in banana and avocado crops, which are the most intensive in water consumption in the Canary Islands.
  • GENERA Day – New tools for the energy transition (November 15): This day will focus on addressing the energy transition in the Canary Islands, hand in hand with the GENERA project, co-financed by the LIFE program of the European Commission (LIFE-2021-CET-LOCAL). This project aims to promote the energy transition to reduce dependence on fossil fuels, improve resilience to climate change, reduce energy costs and promote a more sustainable and environmentally responsible economic development in the islands. During the event, project technicians will empower new generations in energy transition, helping them to make informed decisions to lead a more sustainable future.

The Science and Innovation Weeks in the Canary Islands are promoted by the Ministry of Universities, Science and Innovation of the Government of the Canary Islands, through the Canary Islands Agency for Research, Innovation and Information Society of the Government of the Canary Islands, and the European Quality Week in Tenerife is an initiative of the Island Council of Tenerife which is coordinated by the Island Center for Quality and Responsible Consumption belonging to the Department of Employment, Economic Development and External Action of the Island Council of Tenerife.
