Some twenty public and private entities support this project, which aims to include renewable hydrogen in the process of decarbonization of the islands.
The Institute of Technology and Renewable Energy (ITER), an entity under the Cabildo Insular de Tenerife, has recently joined the “Clúster Hub Hidrógeno Renovable Canarias”, promoted by the DISA Group and Enagás Renovable, with the aim of contributing to the progressive decarbonization of the Archipelago through the production and consumption of renewable hydrogen.
With the signing of the agreement for its participation in the cluster, ITER supports this project, whose purpose is to promote the production of green hydrogen through the electrolysis of previously desalinated seawater, and its distribution and commercialization for various uses related to mobility, heavy transport, port operations, as well as other industrial sectors.
This initiative, which has already been presented to the Government of the Canary Islands, aims to obtain public co-financing through the joint submission of projects to the European “Next Generation” funds to produce green hydrogen in two plants to be located in Tenerife and Gran Canaria.
The project has already started its trajectory to obtain the funds required for its materialization, by applying to the call of the “H2 Pioneers” Program, launched last February by the Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE), an agency under the Ministry of EcologicalTransition. The call is still pending resolution and the promoters of this initiative, which will contribute to the sustainable energy future of the archipelago, expect the result to be known before the end of 2022.
ITER will contribute to research, development and scientific and technological innovation actions to ensure the supply of 100% renewable electric energy necessary for hydrogen production, with a newly built renewable electric production facility.

The Canary Islands Renewable Hydrogen Hub Cluster brings together 27 partners, including institutions, companies and public agencies, private companies, technology centers and academic institutions.
Entities related to land transportation, the maritime, tourism, technology and university sectors, such as Titsa, Global, Guaguas Municipales, Toyota Canarias, Domingo Alonso Group, Grupo Rivera, the Port Authorities of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas are part of the initiative or support it, Aena, Canaragua, Damm, Boluda, Navantia, Balearia, Cotenaval, Ashotel, the FEHT, Grupo Satocan, Astican, Grupo DAMM, Telefónica, the Instituto Tecnológico de Canarias, and the universities of La Laguna, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Galaway, among others.
Green hydrogen
Green hydrogen is obtained by electrolysis of water, which consists of separating the hydrogen from the oxygen in the water using renewable electricity. The most important thing is that this process is powered entirely by renewable energy, so it does not generate any pollutant emissions into the atmosphere and is the cleanest and most sustainable hydrogen.
Green hydrogen is a key sustainable solution for the decarbonization of the economy, being part of the solution to achieve climate neutrality by 2050 set out in the European Green Pact.
Renewable hydrogen is set to be a valuable energy vector for end uses in the Canary Islands, where it is the most efficient solution in the process of decarbonizing mobility, such as fuel cell vehicles, long-distance heavy transport, maritime and air transport, industry and hotels. In addition, the quality of energy vector gives it great potential as an instrument for energy storage and sectoral integration.
