Project overview

Since its commissioning in 2013, the TeideHPC supercomputer (with approximately 18,000 CPU cores and 32TB of RAM) has been providing services to cover the computing needs of ITER and other entities, not only on the island or in the Canary Islands, but also nationally and even internationally.

Given its capacity, this infrastructure is still useful to the scientific community despite its age. However, new trends in the field of parallel computing in the search for more efficient algorithms and implementations in terms of both time and energy consumption are moving towards the use of computationally accelerating devices. Among these accelerators, Graphic Processing Units (GPUs) stand out for their ability to be used successfully in different applications.

Specifically, several ITER work lines, such as renewable energies, genomics, and volcanology, can benefit from the advantages of this type of computing devices when implementing and using simulation tools, CFD, meteorological simulations, big-data, machine-learning, and deep-learning, among others.

Furthermore, there is a clear interest from multiple entities and research teams, not only in the local area, who believe that their lines of work can benefit significantly from the use of GPUs, but they do not have access to these resources.
