This system, called Nexo, not only represents a breakthrough in terms of knowing the status of energy consumption in the institute’s facilities, but also facilitates their analysis and decision making.
The efficient use of a scarce and costly resource such as energy is essential, especially in isolated territories such as islands, where dependence on fossil fuels for energy supply is currently a fundamental part of their production. Thus, the use of solar panels or wind turbines contributes more and more every day to the generation of electrical energy on the islands. However, the optimization of available resources, with the aim of minimizing energy consumption, is also vital to achieve greater energy efficiency.
The Instituto Tecnológico y de Energías Renovables (ITER), as a public sector company under the Cabildo Insular de Tenerife and in its desire to contribute to the energy sustainability of the island of Tenerife, has implemented a real-time consumption monitoring system of its resources and infrastructures to optimize its energy efficiency.
Specifically, the ITER Robotics Unit has worked, within the framework of the Nexo project, in the integration of the energy measurement equipment distributed throughout the ITER facilities in the data platform, counting a total of 58 different devices in which more than one million values of variables are recorded daily: energy consumed, instantaneous active and reactive power, voltages or currents per phase, etc…
A fundamental aspect that has an impact on the energy consumption of any company or home in the Canary Islands is the climate. The adverse weather conditions that occur during heat waves, which are becoming more and more frequent, condition the use of appliances with high peak power consumption, which means an increase in energy consumption and, consequently, in the economic cost associated with it. The integration of real-time consumption data into the Nexo system, which already has real-time data from more than 70 weather stations, allows for a more accurate and high-quality analysis.
The data recorded in Nexo is a breakthrough to know the status of energy consumption in the company’s facilities, however, it is just that, numerical data of energy or weather variables. The added value is obtained through the development of advanced visualization tools that allow the user to quickly analyze the situation and make decisions accordingly.
These panels allow to know in real time the energy consumption of a resource and its associated variables, but at the same time it is possible to make retrospective analysis of any recorded variable in order to determine the causes of unexpected increases in consumption detected a posteriori.
In addition, to more efficiently control these consumptions and avoid the continuous need for consultation by ITER personnel, an event and alarm notification system has been programmed to continuously check the recorded energy values, generating alarms with anomalous or unexpected records such as, for example, high consumption in an office workspace outside working hours or insufficient consumption of a resource that must operate continuously such as ventilation equipment or a cooling pump.
