The Taal volcano has erupted violently several times and is located about 50 kilometers from Manila, the capital of the Philippines. Scientist from ITER and the Volcanology Institute of the Canary Islands (INVOLCAN) have travelled to the Philippines during the second half of March to collaborate with the National Institute of Geological Sciences (NIGS) of the University of the Philippines in Diliman in order to continue strengthening the monitoring program of the Taal volcano. This scientific collaboration is developed thanks to the projects “Strengthening the volcanic early warning system in the Philippines by means of innovative geochemical methodologies”, co-financed by…

ITER particpates as partner in the PLASMAC project, a new project led by the Cabildo of Tenerife through its Open Government Area. The main objective of the project is the creation of a cloud platform to improve the socio – health care offered to the Macaronesian population: specifically in the Canary Islands and Madeira. The initiative, inspired by the principles of open governance (transparency, participation and collaboration) will allow to share and manage information in order to help public and political policy-makers to make better strategic decisions affecting the population in matter of social services. ITER contributes with its wide…
The Genomics Area´s laboratory of ITER has succeeded in sequencing 10 complete human genome tests, i.e., determining the base sequence that make up human DNA. After acquiring two massive DNA sequencers in September 2016 to the U.S. multinational Illumina for one million euros, development of experimental and bioinformatics protocols are going at a good pace. The sequencing of the first complete genomes, used as quality controls, is allowing the final tune of the instrumentation and the experimental and analysis protocols. The multidisciplinary team of the Institute, made up by the researchers José Miguel Lorenzo Salazar, Rafaela González Montelongo and Ana…
This project, which will be developed by ITER throughout this year, is framed within the collaboration that the Cabildo de Tenerife maintains with Senegal, through the External Action Area. The project will be implemented in the village of Ndangalma where a photovoltaic kit will be installed in order to provide energy to the village’s health center, ensuring it’s uninterrupted operation capabilities, of the center despite the frequent power outages that happens in Senegal, while helping to reduce its electricity bill. In particular, the photovoltaic kit is designed to prioritize its energy production for self-consumption, rather than to feed energy into…
This science news service of the American Institute of Physics (AIP) has highlighted it among the thousands of scientific papers presented at the AGU 2016 Fall Meeting held recently in the city of San Francisco. ITER researchers and scientific collaborators of the Volcanology Institute of the Canary Islands (INVOLCAN) lead and participate in a research project whose preliminary results have been recently presented at the largest Earth and space science meeting in the world that has been held in San Francisco for nearly 50 years; the American Geophysical Union meeting (AGU Fall Meeting). This research is related to a possible…
The purpose is to quantify the extension and intensity of the surface geothermal anomalies in Timanfaya National Park and to evaluate its thermoelectric generation potential in order to contribute to the development of geothermal energy in Lanzarote. The Institute of Technology and Renewable Energies participates in a scientific cooperation work in Lanzarote within the frame of the project “Design and experimental development of prototypes for electricity generation by means thermoelectric effect in volcanic surface geothermal anomalies, co-financed by the State Research, Development and Innovation Programme of the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness, the State Research Agency and ERDF funds. The…
The 32nd European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition has also coincided with the INTER-SOLAR photovoltaic solar energy industry international exhibition. ITER participated with three articles on the latest research results in the field of photovoltaic solar energy in this prestigious scientific event, the EU PVSEC “European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition”, which took place from 20 to 24 June 2016 at the International Congress Center in Munich, Germany. In particular, ITER’S PV cell laboratory research group presented the following items: Title: “Optimizing the deposition of thin layers of organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite methylammonium lead iodide (CH3NH3PbI3) on large surfaces…
ITER was actively involved in the celebration of the EU Sustainable Energy Week, organizing their traditional open days and participating in the event “EUSEW Canaries 2016”. ITER participated, once again, in this European initiative with a program of guided tours of its facilities. The open days were held form the 14 to the 24 of June, 2016, with the aim of promoting social awareness about the positive impact of renewable energies in a global scale and, specifically, its importance in isolated territories and Islands. During the visit, the participants had the opportunity to travel through ITER´s 25 years of history…
ITER participates once again in the EU Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW) with a program of guided tours to our installations sorted by the Tenerife Energy Agency (AIET). The visits will be organized between the 14 and the 24 of June of 2016 with the objective of raising social awareness about the positive impact Renewable energies have in a global scale and, specifically, its importance in isolated territories and Islands. During the visit, the participants will have the opportunity to explore ITER´s 25 years of history through some of its facilities, such as the Experimental wind platform, which are normally not…
Mr. Manuel Cendagorta, Director of the Institute of Technology and Renewable Energies, presented at the Fujitsu World Tour 2016 that took place the 25 May, the Genome characterization project in the Canary Islands which intendeds to implement a routine in the use of genetic data for the well-being of the population of the canary islands. To achieve this long-term objective, ITER will focus its initial efforts on those most serious diseases, those that are most prevalent, and in applications that will improve the efficiency of the health care system of the population of the Canary Islands. Hence, that this project…
