The Pla de l’Estany regional landfill, located in Puigpalter (Girona) is the fourth Catalan landfill that has been the subject of research by the scientific team of the Environment Area of ITER and INVOLCAN.

Scientists from the Environmental Area of ITER – Instituto Tecnológico y de Energías Renovables and the Instituto Volcanológico de Canarias (INVOLCAN) collaborate with the Composting Research Group (GICOM) of the Department of Chemical, Biological and Environmental Engineering of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), in a research on the fugitive emission of methane (CH4) to the atmosphere in Catalan landfills that is financed by the Agència de Residus de Catalunya (ARC) of the Generalitat de Catalunya.

From March 15 to 17, a researcher from INVOLCAN and scientific collaborator of ITER’s Environment Area, Dr. María Asensio Ramos, has been working in Catalonia with Dr. Daniel González Alé, from the UAB, to carry out a scientific campaign to determine the fugitive emission of methane (CH4) to the atmosphere from the regional landfill of Pla de l’Estany, located in Puigpalter, province of Girona.

With this work there are already 4 Catalan landfills that have been investigated by the scientific team of ITER-INVOLCAN. The other 3 studies have been carried out in the landfills Centre de Tractament de Residus municipals d’Osona and Can Mata in Els Hostalets de Pierola, both in the province of Barcelona, and the landfill of Castellnou de Seana located in the province of Lleida.
