This new edition of the master’s degree will be taught online by the universities of La Laguna and Cape Verde, in collaboration with the Instituto Tecnológico y de Energías Renovables and Involcan.
The institute is once again collaborating with the internship program in the second edition of the “International Interuniversity Master’s Degree in Energy Decarbonization in Emerging Countries”, which was taught during the 2021-2022 and 2022-2023 academic years.
During the year 2023, the Instituto Tecnológico y de Energías Renovables (ITER) hosted 13 Cape Verdean students in internships as part of the collaboration agreement with the University of La Laguna and the University of Cape Verde, promoters of this international master’s degree. These students were part of the first edition of the Master in Decarbonization, coming from different sectors of the electricity, renewable energy, engineering and education sectors in Cape Verde.
Throughout three blocks, from January 30 to June 23, 2023, the students carried out 11-week internships in areas such as Renewable Energies, Engineering and Environment at ITER and at the Volcanological Institute of the Canary Islands (Involcan), adapting their learning modality to the professional reality of each one.
The main objective of the internship program was to provide students with the opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge in a real working environment, thus gaining valuable experience in renewable energy technologies. In addition, it allowed them to establish connections with professionals and researchers in the sector, thus enhancing their future professional development.
Following the success of the master’s degree and the internship program, it was proposed to continue the initiative through a new two-year agreement for the following two academic years (2023/2024 and 2024/2025), opening the opportunity to students from other African universities. This agreement was signed on December 15, 2023 between the Cabildo of Tenerife, the University of La Laguna and the University of Cape Verde, as part of the Island Corporation’s International Development Cooperation actions. To guarantee the follow-up and control of the agreement, a Follow-up Commission has been created to promote the second edition of the Master’s Degree, provide assistance during the academic courses and solve any problems that may arise during its validity/development.
The new own degree, “International Interuniversity Lifelong Learning Master in Energy Decarbonization of Emerging Countries”, is structured in three expert courses (of 30 ETCS each) and a master degree (of 120 ETCS), and in this second edition, ITER will continue to provide training in internships, scheduled for early 2025.
The Instituto Tecnológico y de Energías Renovables will provide its facilities, mainly in Granadilla de Abona, for the internships of the students of the master’s degree, coordinating with the academic director for the realization of these activities, which could be extended to other companies in Tenerife.
During the internship period, students will have the opportunity to acquire specific knowledge and skills within the energy sector, such as evaluating the advantages and disadvantages of each of the different renewable energy sources, applying the legislative and fiscal aspects that affect the energy sector, understanding and designing improvements in the field of energy transport and distribution and their application in electrically isolated systems, and understanding the concepts that underpin energy efficiency and savings in island systems and emerging countries.
