Project overview

This project will enable cooperation between entities linked to Protected Natural Spaces in the Canary Islands, Cape Verde and Gambia, with the aim of revaluing and conserving them by improving the green and blue transition between them and the related urban and rural spaces. Actions will be promoted in Teno Rural Park (NATURA 2000 Network), Montaña Pelada Natural Monument, Serra Malagueta and Rui Vaz e Pico de Antónia Natural Parks and Bijilo Forest Reserve aimed at developing and consolidating a method to renaturalise various activities in urban and rural areas close to the NPAs. This aims to integrate and connect productive activities, such as the primary sector and tourism, together with leisure activities in natural ecosystems, capitalising on the results of the previous SOSTURMAC project.

Activities will be carried out following the principle of innovation in the implementation of a sustainable and resilient transition, respecting ecosystems and their habitats and contributing to their regeneration through the implementation of nine green infrastructures. The links of the population and visitors with the territory and its natural environment are also strengthened, encouraging social commitment to the conservation of biodiversity, natural and cultural heritage through awareness-raising campaigns in the Canary Islands, Cape Verde and Gambia, as well as the development of economic activities linked to and actively involved in the conservation of natural environments.

General objective of the project: Promote actions for the development and consolidation of a green and blue transition between the protected natural areas and the related urban and rural territories in the cooperation area, promoting sustainability and revaluing their social and touristic link.

Specific objective 1: Revalorize natural heritage by increasing the sustainability of its services and its green connectivity with urban and rural territories.

  • Activity 1.1: Correlate the green connectivity of protected natural spaces with associated urban areas.
  • Activity 1.2: Identify applicable green improvements for protected natural spaces.
  • Activity 1.3: Implement green improvements in protected natural spaces.

Specific Objective 2: Revalorize urban territories through their green infrastructures and connectivity capacity with the natural environment.

  • Activity 2.1: Detect and characterize key urban spaces for their green transformation and connectivity with protected natural spaces.
  • Activity 2.2: Identify and establish solutions based on green infrastructure for application in urban spaces.
  • Activity 2.3: Implement green improvements in urban spaces.

Specific Objective 3: Promote natural spaces and green infrastructure as elements of sustainable development, conservation of natural spaces, tourism revalorization, and resilience of urban and rural territories through the integration of nature.

  • Activity 3.1: Develop and implement a strategy focused on a pilot campaign ‘aliad@s for Conservation’ and awareness-raising actions.
  • Activity 3.2: Develop and participate in activities that revalorize, consolidate, integrate, and transfer project results.
