In 2007, a public call for tenders was launched for the allocation of wind power in the form of new wind farms intended to feed all the energy into the island electricity systems of the Canary Islands, called by the Order of 27 April 2007. The total power in the tender was 440 MW, of which 170 were on the island of Tenerife.

According to the Order of 29 December 2009 (BOC 08 of 14/01/2010) that this tender was unsuccessful, ITER received a wind power allocation for three parks of 18.4 MW each, two of them promoted by an Economic Interest Grouping (AIE) of which it is part:

  • Wind farm of 18.4 MW on the grounds of the Environmental Complex of Arico (Tenerife), in particular near the area of Lomo del Arrastradero, in the Municipal District of Arico (promoted by ITER).
  • Areté and La Roca wind farms with (each of 18.4 MW), both located in the Polígono Industrial de Granadilla, on plot no 26.327, within sector SP1 and SP2, in the Municipality of Granadilla de Abona. The promoter of these facilities is PARQUES EÓLICOS DE GRANADILLA A.I.E., which is owned by three public companies: ITER S.A. (Tenerife Council), GRANADILLA DE SUELO SUR S.L. (Granadilla City Council) and POLÍGONO INDUSTRIAL DE GRANADILLA (Tenerife Council, Government of the Canary Islands, Granadilla City Council and SEPES).

The three wind farms will each consist of 8 ENERCON E-70 wind turbines, each with a nominal power of 2.3 MW, arranged in two rows of machines. Each wind turbine has its own integrated transformer station, which raises the voltage to 20 kV. Since the connection of the Park to the electricity grid is made at 66 kV in the future SE ABONA 220/66 electrical substation, an intermediate 66/20 kV substation is necessary.

This action is co-financed by the MEDI-FDCAN Programme 2016-2025 and is included in the Strategic Framework for Island Development (MEDI) 2016-2025 of the Island Council of Tenerife.

Wind farm of the Environmental Complex of Tenerife

The location of this park in the chosen area, besides the favourable wind conditions prevailing in the area, is conditioned by the compatibility of land use. The Arico Environmental Complex is located in an area of excellent wind potential and being a waste treatment complex, the impact on the environment would be minimal, due to the existing infrastructure and the high anthropic impact of the area. On the other hand, the location of this wind farm is not only compatible with land management but also fully compatible with the activities that are developed in the complex.

With regard to the Arico Environmental Complex, the benefits of this park will contribute to the implementation of mitigation measures in the complex for the possible environmental effects of the same, as well as landscape restoration, In addition to the development of town planning and infrastructure improvements. In addition, through this Wind Farm the Environmental Complex of Arico will contribute to the production of clean and non-polluting energy on a site with high energy consumption and a high potential for renewable energy.

The park will provide clean electricity to 12,854 households over its 25-year useful life, avoiding the annual production of 43,575 tons of CO2 and 154 tons of SO2.

Areté and La Roca Wind Farms in P.I. of Granadilla

The Granadilla industrial estate is located in an area of excellent wind potential and being an industrial complex the impact on the environment would be minimal, due to the already existing infrastructures and in project, and the high anthropic impact of the area. The benefits of this park will contribute to the implementation in the IP of measures to mitigate its possible environmental effects, as well as landscape restoration, apart from the development of urban actions and improvements in its infrastructure. In addition, the P.I. of Granadilla will contribute to the production of clean and non-polluting energy on a site with high energy consumption and a high renewable energy potential.

When planning the location of wind turbines, in addition to taking into account the conditions of the Wind Competition, the Urbanization Plan of these sectors has been considered, so that the wind turbines were always located outside the blocks or in green or common areas, and along their roads (parallel to which they will run the pipelines), minimizing the impact and making their use compatible.

The parks will provide about 25,000 households with clean electricity during their 25-year life span, avoiding the production of nearly 100,000 tons of CO2 and 300 tons of SO2 annually.
