ITER contributes to the promotion of scientific vocations among schoolchildren with the Science and Volcanoes Fair.

The activity promoted by INVOLCAN will take place at the ITER visitor center and at the Teobaldo Power Auditorium in La Orotava on May 9 and 16, respectively.

The Volcanological Institute of the Canary Islands, INVOLCAN, organizes a new edition of the Science and Volcanoes Fair with the aim of promoting scientific vocations among students of 3rd and 4th year of Compulsory Secondary Education and 1st and 2nd year of Baccalaureate. The activity will count with the participation of 11 educational centers and will take place at the ITER Visitors Center on Thursday, May 9th and on Thursday, May 16th at the Teobaldo Power Auditorium in La Orotava.

The Science and Volcanoes Fair is a school science congress during which the results of the scientific work developed by the schoolchildren are presented. These are linked to various projects related to the volcanic phenomenon related to the field of experimental sciences, social sciences and arts. The projects have been supervised by the teachers of the schools with the support of INVOLCAN scientists.

The aim of this event is to continue bringing schoolchildren closer to the geological reality of the Canary Islands, and in particular that of Tenerife, about its risks and its many benefits, as well as to promote interest in the advancement of knowledge as an essential element to contribute to the sustainable development of volcanically active regions. During the Fair, schoolchildren from the island will be brought together to promote their interest in science and volcanism. The participating schoolchildren will be encouraged to learn how to do science through cooperation as a working method and to participate in the different phases involved in carrying out a scientific project.

During the Science and Volcanoes Fair, the documentary “Teide, the sleeping giant” will be screened and the Volcanic Olympiad, an educational tool for learning the main terms related to volcanology, will be held. The contest is based on questions and answers about the volcanic phenomenon and volcanic risk management in order to assess the degree of knowledge of schoolchildren on this subject. In this edition, the groups participating in the Volcanic Olympiad will be named after one of the following Volcanoes of the Decade: Teide (Tenerife, Spain), Vesuvius (Italy), Etna (Italy), Nyiragongo (Congo), Santorini (Greece), Taal (Philippines), Sakurajima (Japan), Colima (Mexico), Merapi (Indonesia) and Mauna Loa (USA).

The schools that will attend the ITER Visitor Center on Thursday, May 9 are CEIPS Santo Domingo (Güímar), IES Santa Ana (Candelaria), IES El Médano (Granadilla de Abona) and IES San Miguel (San Miguel). On May 16, the Teobaldo Power Auditorium will receive students from Colegio Casa Azul (Puerto de la Cruz), Colegio Salesiano (La Orotava), CEO La Milagrosa (La Orotava), IES Mayorazgo (La Orotava), IES La Cruz Santa (Los Realejos), IES Los Realejos (Los Realejos) and Colegio Internacional Pureza de María (Los Realejos).
