ITER collaborates with the Cultural Association “Fiesta de la Vendimia” of La Perdoma, La Orotava.

The Genomics area of ITER coordinated an informative conference about its research activity for this cultural association.

This cultural association, founded in 2002, pursues the promotion, conservation and dissemination of all areas related to the wine culture of Pago de Higa, deeply rooted in our people. And, in addition, it sets among its annual objectives the realization of all kinds of cultural and recreational activities in order to enrich the lives of citizens. In this context, every year it organizes a recreational-cultural excursion with the members of the theater group “Teatruva” attached to this cultural association, which promotes visits to museums, institutions and places of cultural, ethnographic, scientific, etc. interest.

In this context and with this purpose, the Cultural Association “Fiesta de la Vendimia” has visited the ITER facilities last August 31st, 2024 accompanied by the coordination of the Genomics area of ITER. The visit lasted approximately three and a half hours, starting with an informative talk in which the strategic actions that ITER carries out in R&D were presented. After a walk through the headquarters building, the present and future strategic projects of ITER in telecommunications and engineering and renewable energies were briefly presented, to briefly describe some R+D actions that are developed from the Genomics Area of ITER, due to its relevance for the Health of all of us.

The visit continued in the Genomics Laboratory where the assistants could observe part of the facilities that are integrated in the surveillance networks of emerging and re-emerging pathogens (such as the influenza virus and the respiratory syncytial virus) in which ITER participates. Besides the works related to the scientific bets of ITER to collaborate in the fight against the COVID-19, sponsored by the Cabildo Insular de Tenerife, the coordination of the Genomics area presented some other research and development actions that are being carried out in the study of human diseases.

Finally, the group visited the D-Alix project facilities, touring the ITER high performance computing facilities (TeideHPC and AnagaHPC supercomputers), the control center room and the upper deck of the building that houses the data processing center, which provides a panoramic view of the bioclimatic housing park.

Gregorio Pérez and José M. Ramos, members of the management team of the Cultural Association, subsequently expressed their congratulations to both the management and all the workers of ITER for the important work they carry out, as well as for the informative work done by the institution.
