Isla 100%

Isla 100% is a multiplatform application for mobile devices that, in the form of a game, shows the importance of the use of Renewable Energies in island territories.

The objective of this educational game is to achieve the maximum penetration of renewable energies on an island initially dependent on conventional energy, taking into account that the penetration of renewable energies in the electricity system must be carried out without failing to meet the demand at all times, at reasonable costs and taking into account the existing resources of the island. Thus, renewable energy sources such as wind, photovoltaic, geothermal and storage are available for implementation in the energy mix.

The mathematical model on which the educational game is based is Tenerife 100, a strategy for the energy supply of Tenerife with 100% renewable sources, which was improved in the context of the Isla 100 project.

The educational game consists of three different phases in which the difficulty is increased in relation to different possible island scenarios. In each of these phases, the population and energy consumption of the island, its renewable resources, its budget and how the energy produced will be sold must be taken into account.

The educational game is cross-platform, compatible with mobile (iOS and Android) and web technologies.

Its development was made possible thanks to the Renewable Island Project, financed within the framework of the 2014 call for grants for the promotion of scientific, technological and innovation culture of the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology of the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (FECYT).

Isla 100% received the 2016 EnerAgen Award for the best action in terms of awareness and dissemination of renewable energies and/or energy efficiency for the development of the Multiplatform Game, which, in a ‘didactic, entertaining and original’ way, contributes to the dissemination of generation technologies with renewable resources.

In 2021, within the framework of the European project MACLAB-PV ‘Improvement of R&D&I capacities and infrastructures in the renewable energy and energy efficiency sector in the Canary Islands and Senegal’ (INTERREG MAC 2014-2020), the on-line workshop ‘Game ISLA 100% renewable energies in isolated territories – MACLAB-PV project’ was developed, which provides a didactic dynamic to the game ISLA 100%, capitalising on its results. This workshop is being dynamised in various events dedicated to scientific dissemination and public awareness.
