INVOLCAN Calendar
The Volcanological Institute of the Canary Islands (INVOLCAN) has developed the new volcanic calendar of solidarity for 2017, whose theme is the volcanic phenomenon in Macaronesia, thanks to the collaboration of the Directorate General of Security and Emergencies of the Government of the Canary Islands. The aim of the calendar is to transmit information and knowledge about the rich geodiversity that Macaronesia offers through its buildings, structures and volcanic morphologies in the archipelagos of Azores, Madeira, Canary Islands and Cape Verde, through a useful tool such as a calendar.
This 2017 monthly wall calendar, with an exceptional cover photo of the last eruption in Macaronesia (Fogo 2014-2015, Cape Verde), plus 12 sheets of 30.5 x 30.5 centimetres, has on each of its monthly sheets photographs of different buildings, structures and volcanic morphologies that can be found in the Macaronesian region, a small informative note on each of these written in Spanish, English and Portuguese, as well as a list of ephemerides on (i) all the historical eruptions that have occurred in Macaronesia, (ii) all the historical earthquakes felt in the Canary Islands with an intensity greater than V on the Mercalli scale, (iii) all the earthquakes recorded instrumentally in the Canary Islands with a magnitude equal to or greater than 4. 0 on the Richter scale, and (iv) all major volcanic eruptions (mainly of a Volcanic Explosivity Index*, VEI ≥ 4) that occurred in the world during the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries, as well as other significant eruptions.
This new INVOLCAN volcanic solidarity calendar 2017 in 5 languages (Spanish, English, German, French and Portuguese) not only aims to contribute to the strengthening of knowledge about the rich geodiversity of Macaronesia, but also to be one of the many products that undoubtedly contribute to the enrichment of the Competitiveness Plan ‘Canary Islands, a volcanic experience’; therefore, to the strengthening of the economic and business fabric linked to the tourism sector of the Canary Islands by promoting the volcanic phenomenon as a tourist attraction.
The INVOLCAN volcanic solidarity calendar 2017 can be purchased online on the INVOLCAN website and payment (10 € plus shipping and handling) can be made either electronically (paypal) or by bank transfer. It can also be purchased directly for 10 € at the following points of sale currently available in the municipalities of Fuencaliente de La Palma (Tourist Information Office), Garachico (C.I.T. Office Garachico), Güimar (C.I.T. Office Güimar), Granadilla de Abona (ITER Visitor Centre), Icod de los Vinos (C.I.T. Office Icod de los Vinos), La Laguna (Lemus and El Águila Bookshops), La Orotava (Cañadas del Teide National Parador), Puerto de la Cruz (INVOLCAN, Old Taoro Hotel) and Santa Cruz de Tenerife (C.I.T. Office Santa Cruz, Agapea and La Isla Bookshops).
The proceeds from the sale of this 2017 INVOLCAN calendar will go to educational programmes aimed at informing and educating the resident population of the archipelago about the volcanic phenomenon and volcanic risk management in the Canary Islands.
