STIRPE – TOWARDS AN INTELLIGENT TRANSPORT SYSTEM IN URBANIZATIONS AND PEDESTRIAN AREAS The project is framed within the Challenge ‘Intelligent, Sustainable and Integrated Transport’, listed in the framework document ‘Spanish Strategy for Science, Technology and Innovation 2013-2020’. It aims to advance in the solution of the difficulties that currently prevent autonomous vehicles from being a viable alternative to conventional transport. In this sense, the project establishes three main objectives: To establish and validate a testing environment for autonomous vehicles To improve sensing systems, with the common denominator being to undertake the fusion of heterogeneous information sources and the devices separately.…

WEATHER FORECASTS In collaboration with the Earth and Atmosphere Observation Group (GOTA) of the University of La Laguna, a weather prediction model based on the WRF (Weather Research and Forecasting) model was implemented. This tool is a valuable starting point for carrying out various analyses and predictions at different points in the geography. Since its implementation, the wind speed predictions in a high-resolution domain have been used to provide a highly accurate estimation of the electrical power expected to be generated by the wind farms located at ITER. Furthermore, the development of weather forecasts enabled collaboration with the Volcanological Institute…

TECHNICAL SUPPORT IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE EURO-SOLAR PROGRAMME ACTIVITIES General Objective The overall objective of the EURO-SOLAR Program was to promote renewable energies in the 8 most disadvantaged countries of Latin America (Bolivia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Paraguay, and Peru) to contribute to improving the living conditions of rural communities, assisting them in their fight against poverty, isolation, and marginalization caused by their socioeconomic conditions. Specific Objective The specific objective of the EURO-SOLAR Programme was to provide a renewable source of electricity for strictly community use to beneficiary rural communities with limited or no access to the…

Isla 100 is a tool developed by ITER to analyze different scenarios that evaluate hourly the annual energy mix of an isolated community to help in planning the incorporation of renewables and storage. The process of supplying a community of 10,000 inhabitants with renewable energy sources is completely different from that of a community of half a million. For an appropriate integration scheme of renewables, strategies should be developed regionally taking into account local characteristics. These should specifically reflect the needs and behaviour of the daily and seasonal consumption curve, taking into account economic development and human needs, which have…

FACIAL RECOGNIZER With the aim of complementing ITER’s presence control systems as well as acting as a passive system to control the visits of people to ITER, a project is initiated to research and develop a facial recognition application that is sufficiently accurate and self-sufficient to be able to: Complement current presence systems with access for ITER staff. Detect possible intruders and raise alarms. To take a count of the capacities in the different buildings and industrial halls of the company. For this purpose, a proprietary facial detection and recognition algorithm is being developed, which has a reliability of around…

In 2007, a public call for tenders was launched for the allocation of wind power in the form of new wind farms intended to feed all the energy into the island electricity systems of the Canary Islands, called by the Order of 27 April 2007. The total power in the tender was 440 MW, of which 170 were on the island of Tenerife. According to the Order of 29 December 2009 (BOC 08 of 14/01/2010) that this tender was unsuccessful, ITER received a wind power allocation for three parks of 18.4 MW each, two of them promoted by an Economic…

CENTER OF EXCELLENCE FOR DEVELOPMENT AND INNOVATION (CEDEI) In the Canary Islands, and particularly on the island of Tenerife, there are a series of infrastructures that can serve as catalysts for a change in trend in economic activity. The deep crisis of recent years has revealed the weakness of an economy based on a limited set of activities, concentrated basically in the ‘services’ and ‘construction’ sectors. In addition to the infrastructures, there is the high level of training in higher vocational training degrees and in the Canary Island universities. This suggests that it is possible to propose a change in…
