The scientific coordinator of the Volcanological Institute of the Canary Islands (INVOLCAN) and director of the Environment Area of the Institute of Technology and Renewable Energies (ITER), Nemesio M. Pérez Rodríguez, has been awarded the Christiaan Huygens Medal of the European Geosciences Society (EGU) in its 2024 edition.
This medal is a recognition of the efforts made by Nemesio M. Pérez during the last 30 years to contribute to improve volcanic monitoring, surface geothermal exploration and in general geosciences and environmental studies in the Canary Islands, as well as in other regions of the world, which have contributed to the advancement of scientific knowledge. .
To date, and since the first Christiaan Huygens medal was awarded in 2008, Nemesio M. Pérez Rodríguez is the only Spaniard to have received this international recognition.
The Christiaan Huygens Medal was established by the Geosciences Data Systems and Instrumentation Division to recognize significant contributions in fields within the scope of the division. This recognition is awarded for an innovation, development or discovery that has had a major impact on its field, or for a series of contributions, over an extended period, that have led to significant progress.
The European Geosciences Society (EGU) is the leading scientific research organization for Earth, Planets and Space in Europe.
