The conference will be held at the Casa de la Cultura of the municipality and attendance will be free and open to the general public. The educational program is a commitment of the Volcanological Institute of the Canary Islands (INVOLCAN) to contribute to the reduction of volcanic risk in the Canary Islands.
The educational program Canary Islands: a volcanic window on the Atlantic returns to the municipalities of the Canary Islands in classroom format in order to bring volcanoes and volcanic risk management to the Canary Islands society. This program organized by the Volcanological Institute of the Canary Islands (INVOLCAN), an entity dependent on the Cabildo of Tenerife, will be present during the next week in the municipality of El Rosario, in the Casa de la Cultura. The educational program will be developed in three days, being its attendance free and open to the general public, being especially recommended to all the people linked to the security and emergency operations, both professionals and volunteers, who reside in the municipality. The three educational days of this program will take place on July 4, 5 and 6 from 19:00 hours.
The Canary Islands: a volcanic window in the Atlantic was born from the need to regularly inform and educate the citizens living in the Canary Islands about the different dangers associated with volcanic phenomena and the actions to be taken to reduce volcanic risk. With this, we comply with the recommendations described by the Special Plan for Civil Protection and Emergency Attention due to Volcanic Risk in the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands (PEVOLCA) and the Plan of Insular Action against Volcanic Risk in Tenerife.
The ultimate goal of this program is to contribute to making the Canary Islands a better informed and organized community in the face of volcanic risk in order to become much less vulnerable than a community that is unaware or ignorant of the volcanic hazards that surround it, and is not organized to respond to them.
The funding for the development of these activities on the island of Tenerife is channeled through the project “Strengthening the resilience of the municipalities of Tenerife against volcanic risk”, co-financed by the Cabildo de Tenerife and the Institute of Technology and Renewable Energy (ITER). In this new edition, the educational program has the collaboration of the Spanish Volcanological Society (SVE) and the Canary Association of Volcanology (ACANVOL) as well as the collaboration of the 31 municipalities that will host the conference.
Specific objectives and contents of the three educational workshops
The first day aims to inform and educate attendees about the different dangers associated with volcanic phenomena through the screening of a documentary prepared by INVOLCAN and Spanish Television in the Canary Islands “Understanding Volcanic Hazards”, as well as the subsequent discussion on the content of the documentary and the participation of attendees in a question and answer game known as Volcanic Trivia in order to strengthen their knowledge and learning about the different volcanic hazards.
The second day aims to inform and educate the audience on the conceptual difference between volcanic hazard and volcanic risk by screening the documentary “Reducing Volcanic Risk”, edited by the Association for Inland Volcanology and Chemistry (IAVCEI) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). After the screening, a discussion with the audience will be promoted, as well as the participation of the attendees in a second Volcanic Trivia in order to strengthen their knowledge and learning about volcanic risk management.
On the third day, attendees will learn that in our territory they can find “traces” of all the different hazards associated with the volcanic phenomenon that have been announced on the first day as well as the frequency with which these various volcanic hazards occur. Likewise, in this third day, it is intended that the attendees know how the Canary society, as a whole, is materializing the volcanic risk management in the Canary Islands and the degree of compliance with the actions recommended by the international scientific and political community for this purpose. As in previous days, attendees will participate in a third Volcanic Trivia Game to strengthen their knowledge and learning about the volcanic phenomenon and volcanic risk management in the Canary Islands.
