26th BOB Webinar: Energy Optimization: Using Data Analytics and Artificial Intelligence in Renewable Energy Installations

On Thursday, March 9, 2023, researchers from the Robotics Unit of ITER will be the protagonists of the 26th webinar “Energy Optimization: Through data analysis and Artificial Intelligence in renewable energy facilities” organized by the Cajasiente Big Data, open Data and Blockchain Chair of the University of La Laguna.

The efficient use of a scarce and costly resource such as energy is essential, especially in isolated territories such as islands, where dependence on fossil fuels for energy supply is currently a fundamental part of their production. Thus, the use of solar panels, wind turbines or storage systems are increasingly contributing to the generation of electricity on islands. However, the optimization of available resources, with the aim of minimizing consumption and maximizing energy production, is vital to achieve greater energy efficiency.

With the main objective of optimizing resource management, ITER has modernized its digital infrastructure by developing a platform that is responsible for the acquisition, storage and monitoring of data from field equipment (IoT) that is part of the company’s infrastructure: energy meters and network analyzers, electric vehicle chargers, inverters, wind turbines, battery banks, etc. Data from complementary equipment such as water meters, weather stations or environmental sensors are also recorded.

This platform collects large volumes of data, processing a total of 10 million messages per hour and storing a total of 160 million individual data records per day. It is based on a set of open technologies, with the support of the user community, which has enabled the deployment of an efficient, scalable system that meets the needs of the operating teams of wind farms and photovoltaic plants.

In addition, the exploitation of data through artificial intelligence (AI) techniques has allowed ITER to optimize processes in the maintenance of these facilities. Energy consumption and generation prediction systems have been developed based on meteorological data and equipment availability (Delfos), a model for predicting limitation setpoints for RES-E facilities or intelligent systems for data queries and generation of reports and advanced visualizations (BI).

In this webinar, Jorge Ballesteros and Carlos Lecuona from the Robotics and Automation Unit of ITER, will show how an efficient data management and its exploitation through AI techniques have transformed the way of working in our company ITER and how it can be done in the energy sector at regional and national level. A line of research that is being strengthened in the framework of the MACLAB-PVproject , co-financed by the Interreg MAC Program 2014-2020.
