Thirteen students from Cape Verde will carry out their internships in ITER´s Areas of Renewable Energies, Engineering and Environment and in Involcan within the framework of this international interuniversity master’s degree of the universities.

The fist students from Cape Verde arrived this week to the Institute of Technology and Renewable Energies (ITER), to carry out the internship planned within the framework of the “International Interuniversity Master in Energy Decarbonization in Emerging Countries”.

This collaboration is the result of the agreement signed between the University of Cape Verde (Uni-CV), the University of La Laguna (ULL), the Cabildo Insular de Tenerife, through the External Action Area, and ITER, whose objective is to promote the implementation of this international interuniversity degree, organized by both universities, and provide students with practical knowledge applied in the field of renewable energies, which will be developed at ITER facilities.

The first group of thirteen students arrived this week and will carry out their internship until June 23, 2023. This is the first promotion of Cape Verdean students of this international degree, who are all in their second and last year of the Master. These students have a professional in the public and private electricity sector of Cape Verde, renewable energy sector, industrial maintenance companies, engineering companies and secondary education in Cape Verde, among others.

The internships will last 11 weeks, and can be taken entirely in person at ITER, or at least 6 weeks in person and 5 weeks online with their tutors from the country of origin. According to the interests of the students and the subjects studied in the Master, the 13 students will be distributed in the different departments of the Areas of Renewable Energies, Engineering and Environment of ITER, and in the Volcanological Institute of the Canary Islands (Involcan). Some of these students will be tutored by research staff from the MACLAB-PV project and will carry out tasks linked to the R&D lines of this project.

The objective of this internship program is to provide students with the opportunity to apply the knowledge acquired in the classroom to a real work environment, obtaining valuable practical experience in the field of technology applied to different renewable energies. In addition, it will allow students to establish connections with researchers and professionals in the sector, which can be very useful for their future professional development.

About the Master

The International Interuniversity Master’s Degree in Energy Decarbonization in Emerging Countries is a degree at the University of La Laguna, but official in the Cape Verdean institution, having been approved by the corresponding national evaluation agency. It has a total of 28 people enrolled, of which 26 are from Cape Verde and the remaining two, from the Canary Islands. The Cabildo de Tenerife finances this postgraduate course with 130,000 euros, corresponding to two annuities of 65,000 euros each.

This University Course, a pioneer in its international status between two universities, includes three international university expert degrees previously completed: one in Technology for ElectricDecarbonization, a second in Electric and Fuel Decarbonization and a third in Regulation and Energy Integration in Island Systems and Emerging Countries . Thus, the master’s degree is obtained after studying these three experts and 30 credits in the latter degree, divided between practical training that is developed in ITER, training in project management and the Final Degree Project.
