It will allow the connection of up to 50 MW of renewable power, of which 11 MW correspond to the connection of existing photovoltaic plants in ITER and 10 MW to the future Enel Green Power Granadilla Central Wind Farm.

In 2007, ITER planned the construction of a 50 MWA 66/20 kV electrical substation at its facilities in Granadilla. This infrastructure was intended to relieve the existing capacity limitation in the 20 kV lines of the insular electrical Distribution Network, thus allowing the evacuation to the 66 kV Transmission Grid of the energy generated in existing and future facilities. After the start of its construction, the connection point granted for the ITER Substation changed to a new position located in the ABONA 220/66 kV Substation, at that time still to be created in the Industrial Estate of Granadilla, so it was waiting for its construction and commissioning.

Currently, the ABONA 220/66kV Substation is operational, so ITER has resumed the project through the Wind Energy Department and with the collaboration of the Sustainable Architecture and Photovoltaic departments, to complete the execution and obtain the commissioning of the ITER 66/20 kV Substation.

This connection infrastructure is not exclusive to the facilities owned by ITER, but will be shared with other third-party generation facilities. In this regard, ITER, in its capacity as Node – specific single intermediary with Red Eléctrica de España (REE), has processed the application for the connection of the Granadilla Central Wind Farm owned by Enel Green Power. In addition, the pipeline for the 66 kV evacuation line that will connect both substations will be an infrastructure shared with the companies Enel Green Power and Energías Verdes de Tenerife, thus achieving a significant reduction in costs and environmental impact. With the same objective, the channelling of the 20 kV lines that will connect the head centres of the photovoltaic plants with the ITER Substation and that are also part of this project, will be shared with Energías Verdes de Tenerife.

Today, the substation is partially built, with most of the civil works of the building executed and having made the partial purchase of the equipment. Currently, the price updating is being carried out as well as the inclusion of new items that allow compliance with the REE connection procedures and regulations that have entered into force after the date of administrative authorisation of the project.

Likewise, a shared investment has been made between ITER and EGPE corresponding to 10% of the cost of the 66 kV position in the ABONA Substation in order to start of the connection procedures of the Central Wind Farm of Granadilla.
