This new edition of the master’s program will be delivered online by the University of La Laguna and the University of Cape Verde, in collaboration with the Institute of Technology and Renewable Energies (ITER) and Involcan.

The institute collaborates once again with the internship program in the second edition of the “International Interuniversity Master in Energy Decarbonization in Emerging Countries”, which was delivered during the 2021-2022 and 2022-2023 academic years.

During the year 2023, the Institute of Technology and Renewable Energies (ITER) hosted 13 Cape Verdean students as interns as part of the collaboration agreement with the University of La Laguna and the University of Cape Verde, the promoting entities of this international master’s program. These students were part of the first edition of the Decarbonization Master’s program, coming from various sectors in the electrical, renewable energy, engineering, and education fields in Cape Verde.

Throughout three blocks, from January 30 to June 23, 2023, the students completed 11-week internships in areas such as Renewable Energy, Engineering, and Environment at ITER and the Canary Islands Volcanological Institute (Involcan), adapting their learning modality to the professional reality of each one.

The internship program aimed to provide students with the opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge in a real work environment, thus gaining valuable experience in technologies applied to renewable energies. Additionally, it allowed them to establish connections with professionals and researchers in the sector, enhancing their future professional development.

Following the success of the master’s program and the internship program, the continuity of the initiative was proposed through a new two-year agreement for the next two academic years (2023/2024 and 2024/2025), opening the opportunity to students from other African universities. This agreement was signed on December 15, 2023, between the Tenerife Island Council, the University of La Laguna, and the University of Cape Verde, as part of the International Cooperation for Development actions of the Insular Corporation. To ensure the follow-up and control of the agreement, a Monitoring Commission has been created to promote the second edition of the Master’s program, provide assistance during the academic years, and resolve any problems that may arise during its validity/development.

The new self-own degree, “International Interuniversity Permanent Training Master’s Degree in Energy Decarbonization of Emerging Countries”, is structured into three expert courses (each with 30 ECTS) and a master’s degree (with 120 ECTS), and in this second edition, ITER will continue to provide internship training, scheduled for early 2025.

Institute of Technology and Renewable Energies will provide its facilities, mainly in Granadilla de Abona, for the internships of master’s students, coordinating with the academic director for the realization of these activities, which could be extended to other companies in Tenerife.

During the internship period, students will have the opportunity to acquire specific knowledge and skills within the energy sector, such as evaluating the advantages and disadvantages of each of the different renewable energy sources, applying the legislative and fiscal aspects affecting the energy sector, understanding and designing improvements in the field of energy transportation and distribution, and its application in electrically isolated systems, and understanding the concepts underlying efficiency and energy savings in insular systems and emerging countries.
