De las 33 comunicaciones científicas presentadas en la conferencia por ambas entidades, 21 están relacionadas con la reciente erupción en la isla de La Palma.

Personal investigador del Instituto Volcanológico de Canarias (INVOLCAN) y del Instituto Tecnológico y de Energías Renovables (ITER), ambas dependientes del Cabildo Insular de Tenerife, se desplazó la semana pasada a Viena (Austria) para participar en la mayor conferencia internacional sobre Ciencias de la Tierra que se celebra en Europa; la Asamblea General de la European Geosciences Unión (EGU).

La EGU es la mayor conferencia internacional de Ciencias de la Tierra que se celebra anualmente en Europa, reuniendo en Viena (Austria) a geocientíficos de todo el mundo en un encuentro que abarca todas las disciplinas de las ciencias de la Tierra, planetarias y espaciales.

En esta edición de 2023 han participado 18.831 investigadores, de los cuales 15.453 procedentes de 107 países lo hicieron de forma presencial y 3.378 de 105 países concurrieron de forma virtual. En EGU 2023 se han presentado un total de 16.357 comunicaciones en 938 sesiones científicas y el colectivo del INVOLCAN/ITER y colaboradores han contribuido con 33 comunicaciones en 10 sesiones científicas.

Las 33 comunicaciones científicas presentadas por el grupo de INVOLCAN e ITER en EGU 2023 se encuentran relacionadas con investigaciones realizadas en Canarias (La Palma, Gran Canaria, El Hierro, Lanzarote, Tenerife, Fuerteventura y La Gomera), Azores (São Jorge), Madeira y Cabo Verde (Santiago y Fogo) sobre volcanología, exploración geotérmica, geoturismo, y ciencias sociales sobre el riesgo volcánico.

De las 33 comunicaciones científicas, 21 se encuentran relacionadas con la isla de La Palma y 10 de esas 21 con la problemática de los gases en los núcleos poblacionales de La Bombilla y Puerto Naos.

La EGU pretende ofrecer un foro en el que los científicos, especialmente los investigadores que inician su carrera, puedan presentar sus trabajos y debatir sus ideas con expertos de todos los campos de las geociencias.
