{"id":39598,"date":"2023-04-21T11:37:12","date_gmt":"2023-04-21T11:37:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/\u200bnew.iter.es\/thirty-children-from-3rd-and-4th-grades-of-primary-school-learn-about-the-attractions-of-science-and-technology-during-a-visit-to-iter\/"},"modified":"2023-04-21T11:37:12","modified_gmt":"2023-04-21T11:37:12","slug":"thirty-children-from-3rd-and-4th-grades-of-primary-school-learn-about-the-attractions-of-science-and-technology-during-a-visit-to-iter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.iter.es\/en\/thirty-children-from-3rd-and-4th-grades-of-primary-school-learn-about-the-attractions-of-science-and-technology-during-a-visit-to-iter\/","title":{"rendered":"Thirty children from 3rd and 4th grades of Primary School learn about the attractions of science and technology during a visit to ITER"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From the <strong>Institute of Technology and Renewable Energy (ITER) <\/strong>we collaborate with the Cabildo of Tenerife in the celebration of a conference<strong>, <\/strong>aimed at sensitizing more than 30 children of 4th grade of Primary School about the attractions offered by the branches of science and technology to arouse their curiosity for these disciplines of study.<\/p>\n<p>The activity is part of the program of actions promoted by the Island Corporation on the occasion of the celebration, on April 27, <strong>International Day of Girls in ICT<\/strong>, with the aim of contributing to reduce the gender digital gap. The Association of<strong> Women Developers (AdaLOveDev)<\/strong>, the <strong>Computational Thinking Classroom of the ULL<\/strong> and the <strong>Cepsa Foundation<\/strong> are also collaborating in the event. <\/p>\n<p>The second vice-president and councilor of <strong>Presidency, Finance and Modernization<\/strong>, <strong>Berta P\u00e9rez<\/strong>, the delegate councilor of <strong>Equality<\/strong>, <strong>Priscila de Le\u00f3n<\/strong>, the island director of <strong>Modernization<\/strong>, <strong>Daniel Gonz\u00e1lez<\/strong>, and the head of the<strong> Cepsa Foundation in the Canary Islands<\/strong>, <strong>Bel\u00e9n Machado<\/strong>, who accompanied the children from the schools Los Cristianos, in Arona; El Paso, in Icod de los Vinos; Santa Mar\u00eda del Mar, in Santa Cruz; and La Verdellada, in La Laguna, took part in the event.<\/p>\n<p>The day began in the Assembly Hall of the ITER Visitor Center, where the students of the participating schools were received and explained the importance of the celebration of the International Day of Girls in ICT and the need to know the world of ICT to awaken their interest in them and contribute to reduce the gender digital gap.<\/p>\n<p>The students participated in a <strong>demonstration, <\/strong>by the<strong>Robotics Unit of ITER, <\/strong>of the data acquisition that can be obtained through a <strong>drone flight<\/strong> to know the status of the photovoltaic installations on the ITER buildings, after which it was explained to them how the status of the panels can be seen in the thermal image obtained, as it is done in the <strong>AIRCHK project<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>They also visited the<strong> D-ALiX datacenter<\/strong>, the center from which all Internet services are provided, where the<strong> TEIDE<\/strong> HPC supercomputer is located. <a href=\"https:\/\/iter.es\/teide-hpc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>TEIDE HPC supercomputer<\/strong><\/a>and the equipment and server room of both the <strong>Cabildo de Tenerife<\/strong> and several city councils, which is connected to the whole island through the optical fiber of the Tenerife telecommunications ring (AITT). In this center they were able to experience the operation of fiber optic based communication systems, as well as learn about the basic structure and the type of problems that are solved using supercomputing. <\/p>\n<p>The activity was attended by researchers from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maclabpv.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MACLAB-PV project<\/a>, as part of its awareness-raising activities and its cross-cutting objective of promoting the participation of women and girls in science and research.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-31580\" src=\"https:\/\/\u200bwww.iter.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/FuPz-amWcAEzQBl.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"852\" height=\"568\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.iter.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/FuPz-amWcAEzQBl.jpg 1600w, https:\/\/www.iter.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/FuPz-amWcAEzQBl-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.iter.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/FuPz-amWcAEzQBl-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.iter.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/FuPz-amWcAEzQBl-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.iter.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/FuPz-amWcAEzQBl-1536x1023.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.iter.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/FuPz-amWcAEzQBl-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.iter.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/FuPz-amWcAEzQBl-450x300.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.iter.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/FuPz-amWcAEzQBl-1200x800.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 852px) 100vw, 852px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>During the day, the children had the opportunity to chat with representatives of the <strong>AdaLoveDev association<\/strong>, in which they were introduced to current and historical women of reference in the field of science and computer science and explained some of the work that women can do in the technology sector.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the following participated in the activity  <strong><em>Who are you talking to?
