The GENERA project, co-financed by the LIFE program<\/span> the European Commission’s LIFE<\/span> of the European Commission, <\/span> is making progress in supporting the energy transition of European tourist islands. During the meeting, progress made and upcoming activities to maximize the impact of the project were extensively discussed. <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

On September 25 and 26, the partners of the European GENERA project met on the island of Rhodes, Greece, to plan the next steps of the project and to participate in a seminar on the challenges of the energy transition on Greek tourist islands. <\/span>The Instituto Tecnol\u00f3gico y de Energ\u00edas Renovables (ITER), as a partner of the GENERA project, participated in this fifth coordination meeting. <\/span>GENERA is a project co-funded by the European Commission through the LIFE Program, with the aim of addressing the challenges of energy transition in European tourist islands. The consortium consists of partners from Greece, Italy and Spain. <\/span> <\/span>During these two days, ITER research staff travelled to Rhodes, the largest island of the Greek archipelago and with a large tourist presence, to participate in the fifth coordination meeting of the project<\/strong> and to attend the hybrid seminar “<\/strong>Energy transition in the Touristic destinations :<\/strong> The challenge in European Islands “<\/strong>.<\/span>Energy transition in the Touristic destinations: The challenge in European Islands”.<\/i><\/strong> (Energy transition in Touristic destinations: The challenge in European Islands).<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

The first day, held on September 25, was organized and hosted by the South Aegean Region Development Agency (READ S.A.). The project partners shared progress on the various work packages. Among the outstanding achievements, the implementation of key tools, now available on the project website, was presented, as well as the launch of an educational game designed to raise awareness of the importance of the energy transition on the islands. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

The second day was dedicated to the seminar, also organized by READ S.A., in which local key players and speakers from the project consortium member countries participated. Representing Tenerife, ITER invited the Energy Transition Office (OTE) of the Cabildo de Tenerife, which gave a presentation on the progress in climate change, energy and sustainable mobility on the island, highlighting as a success story the creation and operation of the OTE. The seminar, held at the headquarters of the South Aegean Development Agency, was attended by international organizations specialized in energy transition and institutions active in sustainable energy management at a global level. In addition, speakers from similar European projects shared experiences and best practices, together with academics and experts in the field of energy research. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

During the event a commitment was signed between the invited authorities to be part of the \u201cGreen Crusadors\u201d within the GENERA project. Among the signing authorities were the mayor of the island of Chalki, Evangelos Fragkakis, the mayor of Sant Antoni de Portmany, Marcos Serra Colomar, and the president of the Municipal Development Agency of Rhodes, Vaios Kalopitas. This commitment seeks to promote sustainable energy transition on the islands through collaboration and identification of best practices.
