WEATHER FORECASTS<\/h2>\n

In collaboration with the Earth and Atmosphere Observation Group (GOTA) of the University of La Laguna, a weather prediction model based on the WRF (Weather Research and Forecasting) model was implemented. This tool is a valuable starting point for carrying out various analyses and predictions at different points in the geography. <\/p>\n

Since its implementation, the wind speed predictions in a high-resolution domain have been used to provide a highly accurate estimation of the electrical power expected to be generated by the wind farms located at ITER.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, the development of weather forecasts enabled collaboration with the Volcanological Institute of the Canary Islands (INVOLCAN) to provide support during the work they carried out in the volcanic eruption on the island of Fogo (Cape Verde) between December 2014 and February 2015. In that expedition, it was vitally important to know the direction and strength of the wind in the eruption zone, as the dispersion of the gases resulting from the eruption was a determining factor when it came to the movement of personnel to the area. <\/p>\n

A visualization tool was also deployed, which creates daily videos of predictions with different parameters (rain, wind, temperature, etc.) and publishes them on the project’s YouTube channel.<\/p>\n
