P\u00e9rez Rodr\u00edguez, the scientific coordinator of the Volcanological Institute of the Canary Islands (INVOLCAN) and the director of the Environmental Area at the Institute of Technology and Renewable Energies (ITER), has been honored with the <strong>Christiaan Huygens Medal from the European Geosciences Union (EGU)<\/strong> in its 2024 edition.<\/p>\n<p>This medal is a recognition for Nemesio M. P\u00e9rez&#8217;s efforts over the past 30 years to contribute to the improvement of volcanic surveillance, surface geothermal exploration, and, in general, geosciences and environmental studies in the Canary Islands, as well as in other regions of the world, all of which have contributed to the advancement of scientific knowledge.<\/p>\n<p>To date, and since the first Christiaan Huygens Medal was awarded in 2008, Nemesio M. P\u00e9rez Rodr\u00edguez is the only Spaniard to have received this international recognition.<\/p>\n<p>The Christiaan Huygens Medal was established by the Division of Data and Instrumentation Systems in Geosciences to acknowledge significant contributions in fields within the division&#8217;s scope. This recognition is granted for an innovation, development, or discovery that has had a significant impact in its field or for a series of contributions over an extended period that have led to significant progress.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.egu.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">European Geosciences Union (EGU)<\/a> is the leading organization for scientific research in Earth, Planetary, and Space sciences in Europe. EGU promotes basic research in geosciences along with applied research addressing key social and environmental challenges.
