Project Description

INVOLCAN calendar

The Volcanology Institute of the Canary Islands (INVOLCAN) has produced a 2016 “solidarity calendar”, in collaboration with the Canary Islands government’s general directorate for security and emergencies.
The 2016 calendar is titled “Canary Islands, a volcanic window in the Atlantic” and its purpose, as the useful tool that a calendar can be, is to convey to both the local population and visiting tourists alike, the rich diversity of volcanic edifices, structures and morphology that the Canaries offer in each of the inhabited islands.

This 2016 wall calendar, whose front cover features Roque Nublo with Teide in the background, consists of more than 12 sheets measuring 30.5 x 30.5cm, with each month depicting a different volcanic structure building or structure from the Canary islands. Each has a brief descriptive note in Spanish and English. There are also lists of (i) all the historic eruptions of the Canaries, (ii) all the historic earthquakes felt in the archipelago at intensity V or higher on the Mercalli scale, (iii) all earthquakes recorded instrumentally in the Canaries with a magnitude of 4.0 or higher on the Richter scale; and (iv) all major volcanic eruptions (mainly at volcanic explosivity index (VEI≥ 4) that have taken place worldwide during the XIX, XX and XXI centuries, as well as other significant eruptions.

INVOLCAN’s 2016 “solidarity calendar” has been produced in 4 languages (Spanish, English, German and French) aims to, not only help broaden public awareness of the rich geodiversity of the Canary Islands’ volcanism, but also to be one of the numerous products that supports the “Canary Islands, a volcanic experience” commercial competitiveness programme. In other words, to help strengthen the economic and business fabric of the tourism sector by shining a spotlight on the islands’ volcanism as a tourist attraction.

The calendar is available online, and payment (€10 plus postage) can be made using Paypal. It can also be purchased in person at: the Volcanology Institute of the Canary Islands (Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife), the ITER visitors centre (Granadilla industrial park, Tenerife); and at the visitors centre of San Antonio volcano (Fuencaliente, La Palma).

Proceeds from the sale of the calendar are to be fed back into educational programmes designed to inform and educate the Canaries population about volcanic eruptions and volcanic risk management in the archipelago.
