The fourth edition of First Lego League (FLL) Canary Islands will take place on February 20 in the Auditorium Infanta Leonor de los Cristianos, organized by the Cabildo de Tenerife, through the Parque Científico y Tecnológico de Tenerife (PCTT) and TF Innova programme, with the co-organization of the Ayuntamiento de Arona, ULL and its Fundación General and the Scientia Foundation. The Fist Lego League (FLL), is a tournament of regional scope, in which 43 teams have registered. 24 in the First Lego League (FLL) mode for 10-16 year olds, and 19 in the Junior First Lego League (FLL Jr.), aimed at 6 to 9 year olds, of the archipelago.

Once again, ITER will support this initiative whose main objective is the promotion of scientific and technological vocations among schoolchildren and whose global challenge, “Trash Trek”, seeks to find new ways to manage residues: starting with its collection and classification up to its intelligent reuse. In order to develop an innovative solution, the teams will collaborate with the Residue management and Treatment Company, Urbaser, that has already shared with them a number of real problems to foster the development of scientific projects.

Awaking scientific vocation

The values acquired through teamwork, innovation and creativity as well as entrepreneurship, are cross-cutting objectives that developed in FLL Canary Islands. In the preliminary round and in groups of 3 to 10 students of the FLL category will solve the challenge “Trash Trek”. This task is divided in three parts: design, build-up and programme of a robot built with LEGO pieces that will finish the missions set in 2’30hrs. Engineering, creativity and invention will be used to fulfil this scientific project, which aims to identify and investigate a real situation problem and propose innovative solutions. Group spirit, enthusiasm and respect for themselves and others are also evaluated in a project called “values FLL”.

Moreover, the younger students in the category Jr. FLL, will also face the same challenge by presenting a science project using a lego demo and a work on values that will be presented in a poster format.

Have Fun and Experiment Fair

“Have fun and Experiment” the fair organized by cienci@ULL, will again encourage the setting of the fourth edition of the First Lego League (FLL) on Feb. 20 in the Auditorium Infanta Leonor de Los Cristianos.

As in previous editions, ITER will participate at this fair with the D-ALiX itinerant tent explaining the insular connectivity project as well as the operation of the fiber optic among other things.

The fair will offer numerous activities to stimulate curiosity towards science and technology at the fourth edition of First Lego League. Thus, attendees will receive a sample of the research activity that takes place in centres of R&D in the Canary Islands and a practical exhibition, workshops and recreational activities as origami, painting and musical performances will be carried out.
